Are grapeseed oil and olive oil interchangeable?

Are grapeseed oil and olive oil interchangeable?
-Linda

Hello Linda,

Grapeseed oil has been gaining popularity and I’ve been hearing a lot more about it lately, whereas I hadn’t even heard of it until recently!

You can substitute grapeseed oil for olive oil successfully, but there are a couple of differences you should be aware of.  Since grape seed oil has a higher smoke point (the point at which oil begins to smoke) than olive oil, it’s actually better for cooking with at high temperatures than olive oil is—take stir-frying and sautéing, for example.  Grapeseed oil has a clean, light flavor so if you’re after the rich, hearty flavor of extra-virgin olive oil, use that instead.  Because it has a neutral flavor, you can use grapeseed oil for baking or as a base for flavorful salad dressings.  Give it a try in my Summer Vegetables with Citrus Dressing or in one of my favorite grilling marinade recipes.
