Do you have any good ideas for kids’ school “brown bag” lunches? I know my son gets tired of the same ham and cheese or PBJ sandwich and Spaghettios. I would really like to give him great lunches that are quick and delicious.

Hi Tami! Oh, my–is it back-to-school time already? Well, I have just the solution for your same-old same-old lunchboxes. Our sister site, cookingvillage.com, has a wonderful article about adding new life to brown bag lunches. Check out Thinking Outside the Lunchbox for some great lunchbox ideas. And please write back and let me know which ones you think your son will go for!

Could you add a recipe for chicken tenderloins?

Well thanks but that didn’t help at all. I am talking about “kids” lunches. Kids who don’t like cream cheese, celery, hummus, tuna. Frankly some of those ideas sound gross to me. Celery, peanut butter and raisens. YUCK! Rice cakes? he is too skinny already. I am sorry but whether you pack a sandwich all together or put each ingredient in separate containers, it is still a sandwich. Quiche or frittata, what the heck is a frittata??? Who ever wrote that article does NOT have kids. Maybe grown kids, but not teenagers.
Hi Tami. I’m so sorry you didn’t find those suggestions helpful. Picky kids can be more difficult. (Believe me, I know! I swear my youngest survived solely on PBJ, grilled cheese and pizza for years.) But why not give the breakfast-for-lunch thing a shot, incorporating some of things you son does like? You could also go with cheese tortellini salad with veggies and chopped meat he likes (and use oil and vinegar if he doesn’t like creamy dressings). And if he likes Spaghettios, maybe some of your leftover homemade pasta or mac-and-cheese. And remember roll-ups with deli slices and American cheese (instead of cream cheese).
You might also try involving you son in the planning of his lunches. Ask him to name 4 or 5 of his most-favorite foods, then try to incorporate at least one of them in every lunch for a week. And maybe for one day every week, let him decide everything that will go into his lunch, and have him help you put it together.
Even though he’s a picky eater, I do hope you do your best to get him to try new things – he may actually start liking some previously yucky foods. But maybe not. In the end, the both of you may have to settle for the same-old same-old, if that’s all he agrees to eat!
I as well have a very picky eater. I give him V8 Fusion drink which helps with atleast one serving of Veggies and Fruit. But I had to come up with a Morning Snack for his preschool class and did the ants on a log–Peanut Butter and Celery with raisins on top, not only nutrious but the kids loved it. I also made some with cream cheese as something a little different. It went over very well. Actually if you try it–it’s very good.
