Bug-Proofing Boxed Mixes
I often buy boxed mixes -- rices, cornbread, pastas -- when they're on sale. I often don't use them right away and I've found I've gotten bugs in them, which is why I always pour the mix into a bowl before I put it in the pot.
My question is, would it be safe to put the boxes in the refrigerator or freezer, so they would keep better? Would it compromise the quality of the product?
Thank you,
Tina
Hi Tina
Absolutely, you can store boxed mixes for rice, bread, pasta, etc., in the fridge. I also occasionally have critter problems, so I always put my dried pasta in the fridge. Cornbread and other bread mixes can go in the freezer as well as the fridge, but I’m not so sure about pasta and rice: There might be condensation/moisture problems when thawing them. You might also try sealing the mix boxes in heavy-duty resealable plastic bags for pantry storage.

QuestionI love Grandma’s Kitchen recipes, there are a lot that have become a tradition around holidays and at the dinner table. I get so many compliments on them when I take them to someone’s house and I always have people ask me for the recipe. I have lost some over the years, but was delighted to find some of my favorites on your website. One recipe that we loved, but that is missing from the site, is braised short ribs -- That was amazing!!! I would be forever grateful if you could add that recipe to this website for me! Thanks again. ~Priscilla~March 2012
