Milky Glass

Some of my canning jars look milky, most likely from years of use in our hard water. Is there any way to get rid of that? I suppose they are still safe to use, but, they don’t look nice. Name: Brenda
Hi Brenda! It’s likely that the milky appearance of your jars is caused by one of two things:  Hard water build-up (as you suggest) or actual “etching” of the glass by chemicals in your dishwasher soap.  If the cause is hard water, you could try adding some vinegar or a commercial product like Jet Dry to your dishwasher before closing and running the washer.  If the cause is etching, I’m afraid there’s not much you can do to salvage those jars. As you say, they are safe to use, but they don’t look that attractive!

    Hi Denise,

My goodness, I didn’t realize there are so many people allergic to cinnamon!  I had this very question a couple of weeks ago, but about Cinnamon-less Apple Pie.  The advice there holds true for pumpkin pie as well: You can substitute another spice (like nutmeg or allspice), or simply omit the cinnamon.

And if you haven't finalized your menu yet, you might want to browse all my Thanksgiving Recipes! My boyfriend is allergic to cinnamon and he wants pumpkin pie. What can I use instead of cinnamon?
