Petits Fours and Tea Parties

We are having an “Alice in Wonderland” tea party this weekend for my daughter’s 17th birthday and would really like to make some petit fours that say “eat me.” But… I don’t know how. Any suggestions? I’m okay with using fondant to cover them, but apart from that, I just need the simplest and least expensive way to pull off this tea party. Also, any other “tea” food ideas would be great. Thanx!

Hi Marie! First, Happy Birthday to your daughter; I’m sure she’ll love her party!  I’ve got a terrific  recipe that will be just perfect for the party. Check out Decadent Petits Fours.

The easiest way to decorate the petits fours after you’ve frosted them is to use tubes of colored “decorating icing” that you can find in the baking aisle of large supermarkets. They make “writing” with icing super simple!

If you’d like a more “from-scratch” decoration, try this:  Combine 1 cup confectioners’ sugar with just enough milk to make a somewhat-stiff icing. Spoon into a small resealable plastic bag and push into a corner. Snip off a tiny piece of the corner; then squeeze the icing out of the small hole to pipe letters on the petits fours. (You could also use a pastry bag, if you have one, fitted with a small writing tip.) It may take a little practice to get the writing to look good, so try “writing” on a plate or cutting board first to refine your technique.

As for other tea party fare, see if any of these recipes appeal to you:
Carrot Bread
Mushroom Croustades
Chicken & Almond Bites
Blue Cheese Grapes
Almond Deviled Eggs
Old-Fashioned Tea Cakes
Dill Sour Cream Scones
Blueberry Tea Cake
Harvest Tea Loaf

Do let me know how the party goes!
