Pinto Bean Recipes

Could you list some recipes that use raw pinto beans? --Pamela
Hi Pamela! I think you’re talking about using dried pinto beans, as opposed to cooking with canned, already-cooked beans – is that right?  (I hope so, because eating raw beans of any type--except for green beans, which are a different animal altogether--is a no-no because they contain enzymes that are toxic; cooking neutralizes those enzymes.)  All that said, I don’t have many recipes that call for dried pinto beans; most of my bean recipes use canned beans because I know how time-pressed moms and dads are these days. But I do have one recipe: Bronco Buster Soup uses dried pinto beans. But did you know that you can use your own homemade beans in any recipe that calls for canned beans? One 15-ounce can contains about 1 3/4 cups beans. So go ahead and use your home-cooked beans (pintos or other kinds) in recipes like Cuban Black Bean SoupPasta e Fagioli, Five-Way Cincinnati Chili and any of my other Bean Recipes.

What Others Have To Say

My daughter and her husband grew pinto beans..so I have quite a few raw pinto beans (I realize they need to be soaked before use) and was looking for recipes to use them.

My family and I would love to have this gorgeous dessert on our Thanksgiving table again. Please help! Thanks. --Tiffany Dugger

  • Question
I had the recipe card for Chicken & Dressing Bake and also for Ham Puffs. But my 12-year-old daughter, who now does a lot of baking thanks to Grandma's recipes, has misplaced them. Can you please share the recipes? The puff recipe was one where after you bake pastry puffs, you stuff them with tuna or chicken or cheese filling. My daughter makes them for church and family gatherings and gets rave reviews. --Carol
