Recipes for Grandma

Hello, I want to cook my grandma a meal but it’s gotta be simple and delicious. Can you send a recipe for an appetizer, main, and dessert? And drinks will be great too. Thank you!
-Stephanie
Hello Stephanie!
It’s so sweet that you’re planning to cook your grandma a meal. She’s very lucky to have such a considerate granddaughter!  I have some ideas for you that will keep it simple but still be delicious.

For starters, Creamy Stuffed Celery is a fresh and easy appetizer you can prepare ahead of time. If your grandma prefers a more sophisticated flavor combination, impress her with Granny Smith & Brie Crostini, which are elegant but oh-so-simple.  Or for a rustic, make-ahead option, try my Marinated Tomato Salad with some crusty bread to start.

Now onto the main course!  Creamed Chicken & Biscuits, Chicken & Garlic Vegetables, or Savory Chicken Pot Pie would all fit the bill nicely.  They’re all easy to make, too!  And on the side?  Simple steamed green veggies topped with a little butter or olive oil and simply seasoned with salt and pepper would be great, or you could try Perfect Creamed Spinach or Tangy Green Beans if you want to make something with a little more pizzazz.

And of course, you’ll have to end with a wonderful dessert!  Although it can’t be anything complicated after preparing a full meal already.  Luscious Lemon Delight and Chocolate Éclair Dessert are quick and easy make-ahead options, or try Oaty Apple Crisp or Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake.

And as for drinks, Raspberry Iced Tea or Strawberry Lemonade would be delightful additions to your menu.

No matter what you make, I’m sure your grandmother will really appreciate your thoughtfulness and you’ll be creating wonderful memories for the two of you to cherish.  Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Thanks so much for the red eye gravy recipe - I made it last night and it was just like Mama used to make; it was like "going home"! Now I have another question: I am very allergic to cilantro, which appears in so many Tex/Mex recipes (whole face swells up if I eat it). Is there ANYTHING ELSE I can use that will have at least a similar flavor? I tried parsley, but it did not do much. Any suggestions? --Nana Ruth

Our farmers’ market has such great corn on the cob! Can I use fresh corn in recipes that call for canned?

  • Question

I am puzzled by the puff pastry method… the flour is to be just thrown into the boiling water, won’t it clump? What would happen if the flour and salt was first mixed with a bit of cold water? Would it still clump? Or what would happen? Or has it never been tried this way before?

I am looking for the chicken stroganoff recipe. It is so good, like fried chicken on noodles. I misplaced the original card I received, and when I got your recent postcard, that was the first recipe my wife and I thought of. Please let me know if it is available. Thank you. --Chuck

I have to make cut-out cookies for a wedding and decorate them like penguins. Black icing is so hard to keep a true black. What type of icing would you recommend? Royal, quick pour, fondant or something else? And how do I keep the black as black as when I first make it? –Kathy

    Hi Betty,
Would you happen to have the recipe for the old fashion cooked Date Roll Candy? My mother-in-law always made it at Christmas and I never did get that recipe. Everyone loved it and looked forward to her sweets. Thank you for your help.
