There always seemed to be a plate of these squares in Grandma's kitchen for the children.
Though smoked mozzarella gives this appetizer a distinct flavor, you can save money by using plain mozzarella. For even more savings, use drained and thinly sliced canned tomatoes.
Keep a rich butter flavor for less money. Use half butter and half vegetable oil when a recipe calls for sautéing in butter. An added bonus is that oil allows you to cook at higher temperatures.
Here is a less costly alternative to sour cream-or a quick substitute. Beat 4 ounces softened cream cheese with 2 tablespoons milk. Use this thinned mixture in place of the sour cream.
If fresh snow peas are too pricey, consider substituting sugar snap peas, julienned green bell peppers or broccoli florets. Each will provide a beautiful green color and a wonderful taste, too.
This recipe substitutes low-cost sunflower seeds for high-priced pine nuts. However, you can use almost any mild-flavored nut or seed-such as walnuts, pecans or pumpkin seeds.
To save money and extend the flavor of summer, purchase fresh corn-on-the-cob from your favorite farm stand. Cook the corn in boiling water for 2 minutes and drain. Freeze until ready to use in this appetizer.
To save a few pennies, buy a large wedge of Cheddar cheese from the deli section of the supermarket. Then simply shred the Cheddar in a food processor, and freeze the extra in resealable plastic bags.
When fresh avocados are at their most expensive in the produce section of the supermarket, check out the frozen food section. Some supermarkets stock frozen avocado pulp, which is more economical.
Making crostini is a perfect way to salvage stale bread. Brush with oil to restore the moisture to the bread. Top with a variety of sautéed or grilled vegetables for a delicious treat.
The price of mayonnaise varies greatly between store brands and national brands. Save money and purchase the store brand for this recipe. Add a squeeze of lemon juice for a flavor boost.
For an equally tasty spinach roll that is also economical, try 1/2 cup chopped ham instead of the bacon. Look for the supermarket special-baked, boiled, low-salt or country ham will work well.
