You can make good use of leftover oven fries. They are a delicious addition to any egg dish-such as quiches, omelettes, or frittatas-or chop and add to savory main-dish pies or casseroles.
Save money and make your own soft bread crumbs by using 2- or 3-day-old bread crusts. Remove crusts and process in a food processor for about 10 to 15 seconds.
A bunch of fresh rosemary can cost well over $1. For about the same price, you can buy a small rosemary plant that will grow on a windowsill. Then you can remove this herb from your shopping list.
Turn leftover skillet potatoes into a quick and tasty main dish. Reheat on the stove top with cooked and crumbled turkey or pork sausage. Add sautéed diced bell peppers for extra color and flavor.
Take advantage of sales to stock up on your favorite varieties of cheese. Most popular varieties of cheese-Cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, Parmesan, Monterey Jack-freeze very well for up to 6 months.
Onions and potatoes should not be stored together because the potatoes will spoil quickly. To keep these vegetables fresher longer, store away from heat or light in separate areas.
Canola oil, corn oil and safflower oil are all equally good choices for frying the potatoes in this recipe. Compare prices. Depending on the region, corn oil may be the least expensive.
Mint is one herb that is nearly as good dried as it is fresh. So if fresh mint costs too much or is not readily available, you can confidently substitute 1 teaspoon dried mint in this recipe.
The olive oil called for in this recipe makes a significant taste contribution. If you do not use olive oil often, seek out the smallest bottle you can find and get the most flavor for the least money.
You can save both money and time by substituting 1 cup undiluted cream of mushroom soup seasoned with 1 teaspoon dried thyme for the sauce in step 4. Then proceed as recipe directs.
For a less expensive side dish, use canned rather than fresh sweet potatoes. Since you won't have the potato skins, bake the potato-apple mixture in four individual ramekins or small soufflé dishes.
If nonalcoholic dark beer is not available at the local grocery store or is priced beyond your budget, you can substitute 1/2 cup chicken broth. The potatoes will turn out just as delicious.
