You can make a quick and inexpensive pot pie supper by spooning any leftover sauerbraten into individual baking dishes. Top each with a piece of puff pastry and bake at 350°F until the pastry is golden.

Ingredients

Serves 6 

  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1 1/2 pounds round steak, 1/2 inch thick, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 (.75-ounce) envelope brown gravy mix
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons white- wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 6 cups hot cooked egg noodles
Directions

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Heat shortening in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add steak; cook until browned, about 10 minutes. Remove and place in a medium casserole.

    Add gravy mix and water to skillet. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.

    Add dried onion, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, ginger, bay leaf, salt and pepper to skillet.

    Pour sauce over steak. Bake, covered, until steak is tender, about 50 minutes. Discard bay leaf. Mound hot noodles onto a serving platter. Spoon steak mixture over noodles.
