Shortcut Beef Goulash

20 minutesMake dumplings with goulash. Mix 11/2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 2 eggs and 1/2 cup milk. Drop bits of batter into boiling water. Cook until dumplings float.

- 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 (14 1/2-ounce) can beef broth
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 large onions, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, chopped
- 1 pound sirloin steak
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar

Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add flour. Cook, stirring, until browned. Add broth; stir until smooth. Add garlic salt, caraway seeds and pepper; stir until thickened. Set aside.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, cut steak into bite-size pieces. Add to skillet. Cook until steak is browned, about 5 minutes.

Add broth mixture, paprika and vinegar to skillet; stir until well blended. Cook until gravy is thickened, about 5 minutes.

If you want a richer tasting gravy, add 2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder to the broth mixture during step 1.
