Sesame Mashed Potatoes

22 minutes“When I turned eight years old, I was allowed to mash the potatoes. I was thrilled, because it looked like such fun.”
Ingredients
Serves 12
- 8 large russet potatoes (about 4 1/2 to 5 pounds)
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup half-and-half
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds, toasted
- 2 teaspoons garlic salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
Directions

Peel potatoes and cut into quarters. Combine potatoes and enough water to cover by 1 inch in a large saucepan. Cook until potatoes are tender, about 22 minutes; drain. Mash potatoes in a large bowl.

Combine cream cheese and Cheddar in a small bowl. Beat with an electric mixer set at medium speed until blended.

Add cream cheese mixture, half-and-half, sesame seeds, garlic salt and black pepper to the potatoes and mix well.

Spoon potato mixture into a serving dish. Dot with butter. Sprinkle with paprika. Serve potatoes immediately.

Grandma's Secret Tip
"There's just no substitute for a potato masher," Grandma said. She was right. When she mashed potatoes with a hand mixer or a ricer, the texture was different than when she used a masher. So Grandma invested in a good masher and it came in handy for other cooking chores as well, such as crushing berries for jam or creaming large amounts of butter.
