Almond Toffee Bars

25 minutesTo keep almonds fresh longer, seal them tightly in a heavy plastic bag and store them in the freezer. There is no need to thaw almonds before using them in the recipe.
Ingredients

- 2 1/3 cups flour
- 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips, divided
- 1 cup slivered almonds, divided
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 (6-ounce) package toffee bits

Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix flour and brown sugar in a bowl. Cut in butter, using a pastry blender or 2 knives, until crumbly. Add egg and mix well.

Stir in 11/2 cups chocolate chips and 1/2 cup almonds. Reserve 11/2 cups of the mixture. Press the remaining mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking pan.

Bake for 10 minutes. Pour sweetened condensed milk over the baked layer.

Sprinkle with the reserved crumb mixture, toffee bits, remaining almonds and chocolate chips. Bake for 25 minutes longer or until golden brown.

If you keep chocolate baking squares in your pantry, use them instead of unsweetened cocoa powder to save a little money. Melt 11/4 squares with the butter in step 1, and increase the flour to 1/3 cup.
