Grandma had such an easy secret for imparting awesome BBQ flavor into her burgers—a touch of sauce in the hamburger mixture!

Ingredients

Serves 4

  • 1 pound lean ground chuck
  • 2 tablespoons prepared barbecue sauce, plus more for serving
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter
  • 4 split sesame-seed sandwich buns
  • 1 cup prepared coleslaw
Directions
  1. 1

Crumble the ground beef into a bowl and add the barbecue sauce. Season with the salt and pepper. Mix gently without overworking, then shape into 4 patties.

  2. 2

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the burgers and cook, turning once, for 6 minutes, for medium doneness. (Or, broil or grill the burgers for 5 minutes, turning once.)

  3. 3

Meanwhile, warm the buns in the oven or grill top. Top each split bun with a burger, some barbecue sauce and 1/4 cup of coleslaw.

Grandma's Secret Tip

Grandma's Secret Tip

Grandma liked to make bottled barbecue sauce her own by adding seasonings and condiments. Worcestershire or soy sauce, maple syrup or honey, minced fresh ginger or garlic, mustard or horseradish—all were fair game when it came to Grandma’s sauce!
