Grandma's Secret Trick
On busy days, a savory meal was often simmering away in Grandma's slow cooker. Because she used her slow cooker often, Grandma knew that lifting the lid during cooking was a no-no. Every peek allowed the heat to escape and added 15 to 20 minutes to the cooking time. Instead, she spun the slow cooker's clear lid until the condensation dripped away so she could see the food without lifting the lid.
The more things change, the more they stay the same: Grandma served this with corn bread; I serve it with corn tortillas.
