Hearty beef patties are accented with zesty onion and fresh sage and smothered with fresh mushrooms simmered in gravy.

Ingredients

Serves 4

  • 1 1/2 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion (about 1 small)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 package (8-ounce) fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 jar (12-ounce) beef gravy
Directions
  1. 1

Combine the beef, onion, sage, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a round patty, about3/4-inch thick.

  2. 2

Cook the patties in a large skillet over medium heat, turning once, until desired doneness, 10–14 minutes.

  3. 3

Meanwhile, melt the butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are tender, 5–7 minutes. Stir in the gravy. Cook until the gravy is heated through, 3–5 minutes longer. Serve the gravy over the patties.

Grandma's Secret Tip

Raised griddle pans also work well for cooking Salisbury steaks and hamburgers, and help drain grease away from the meat.

Serve with creamy mashed potatoes and buttered sugar snap peas. Peach pie is the perfect dessert.
