Grilled Beef Kebabs

Ingredients

  • 1 envelope Italian salad dressing mix
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 (1 1/4-pound) round steak
  • 1 large green bell pepper
  • 1 large onion
  • 12 large cherry tomatoes

Directions

  • 1
Combine salad dressing mix, vinegar, water and chili powder in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake well. Add the orange juice and vegetable oil; shake well.
  • 2
Cut steak into 1-inch cubes. Arrange in a shallow dish. Pour three-fourths of the marinade over the steak, reserving the remaining marinade in the jar. Chill the steak, covered, for 8 to 24 hours.
  • 3
    Preheat the grill to medium-high.
  • 4
Cut bell pepper into 1-inch pieces. Cut onion into 12 wedges. Remove the steak from the marinade.
  • 5
Alternate steak, bell pepper, tomatoes and onion on 4 skewers. Grill 4 to 6 inches from heat for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, brushing frequently with the reserved marinade.

Grandma's Secret Trick

Grandma's secret to great-tasting kebabs was to put the onion next to the meat. That way, plenty of onion flavor was grilled right into the meat. For her grandchildren, she kept the onion separate from the meat or left it off altogether.
