Grandma's Secret Trick
Grandma sometimes stretched this meat mixture to make six meat patties, as her mother had done during war rationing. She added 1 egg and 1 cup bread crumbs or crushed wheat flake cereal to the meat, then shaped the mixture and filled it with mozzarella cheese. The patties held together better in a skillet or broiler pan, so Grandma often fried or broiled them rather than grilling them.
We asked Grandma if she had to cook all day to make her beef-and-vegetable pie. She just smiled.
Now that I have a family, I use Grandma’s lamb for my family’s special occasions.
