Serves 4

  • 1 pound lean ground chuck
  • 1/4 pound finely diced pepperoni
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce, heated
  • 4 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 small loaf (10 ounces) Italian bread
Directions
  1. 1

Crumble the ground beef into a bowl and gently mix in the pepperoni and seasoning. Season with the salt and pepper. Mix gently without overworking, then shape into 4 patties.

  2. 2

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the burgers and cook, turning once, for 6 minutes, for medium doneness. (Or, broil or grill the burgers for 5 minutes, turning once.)Top each burger with pizza sauce and mozzarella before the last minute of cooking.

  3. 3

Split the Italian bread lengthwise, then cut into quarters. Toast the bread and place each burger between 2 pieces.

Grandma's Secret Tip

Grandma's Secret Tip

Grandma didn’t usually buy pre-shredded cheeses because block cheese kept longer and she thought the shredded stuff was too expensive. But she did buy shredded mozzarella occasionally because she didn’t like shredding the soft cheese.
