I make these cookies for my daughter’s ‘tea’ parties just like Grandma made them for mine.

Ingredients

Serves 24

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup (1 stick plus 2 1/3 tablespoons) butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup mixed berry preserves
  • Additional granulated sugar
Directions
  1. 1

Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine flour, butter, sugar, egg, milk, vanilla, salt and baking soda in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer set on medium speed until well mixed, about 3 to 4 minutes, scraping bowl often.

  2. 2

Roll dough, half at a time, to 1/8-inchthickness on well-floured surface. Cut into 48 rounds with lightly floured 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter. Place half the rounds 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets; place a level teaspoonful preserves in center of each round.

  3. 3

Make a small X or cutout with a very small cookie cutter in top of each remaining round. Place over rounds with preserves; press dough edges together with fork. Sprinkle with sugar.

  4. 4

Bake until edges are very lightly browned, about 11 to 13 minutes. Remove immediately to wire racks and let cool completely.

Grandma's Secret Trick

Grandma's Secret Trick

When we were budding cooks in Grandma's kitchen, these cookies were one of our favorite recipes to make together. It had enough little steps to make it fun and keep all of us busy. Grandma let us roll out and cut the dough into circles. We took turns at spooning on the preserves, crimping the edges with a fork and sprinkling on the sugar. The hardest part was waiting until the baked cookies were cool enough to devour.
