Creepy Monster Finger Cookies
Prep time:
30 minutes plus chillingBake time:
20 minutes“My aunts were divided as to whether these sickly green cookies were creepy-gross or laugh-out-loud fun. Grandma assured them that they were fun.”
Ingredients
Serves 40
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
- Green food coloring
- Sliced almonds
Directions
1
In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer set on medium, beat the butter until creamy. Beat in the confectioners' sugar, egg and almond extract. Gradually beat in the flour mixture until a soft dough forms.
2
Tint the dough, using a few drops of food coloring. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and chill until just firm, about 45 minutes.
3
Preheat the oven to 350F. For each cookie, using lightly floured hands, roll tablespoonfuls of the dough into finger shapes. Using a knife, mark knuckle lines across the center of each finger. Lightly flatten the end of each finger. Press sliced almonds on flattened areas for fingernails.
4
Place the finger shapes on ungreased baking sheets. Bake the cookies until they are firm and the bottoms begin to turn golden, 18 to 20 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire racks; cool completely.

Grandma's Secret Tip
Grandma's Secret Tip
To soften the butter, Grandma usually took it out of the fridge about an hour before starting to make these cookies. If she forgot, she would cut the butter into 1/2-inch slices, spread them out on a plate and zap in the microwave for about 30 seconds on medium-low. Or sometimes she placed the plate on the stove for about 5 minutes while the oven was preheating.
