Glazed Vanilla Cookies

Ingredients
Serves 42
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, softened
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 2 egg yolks
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk or orange juice
- Grated orange zest, optional for garnish
Directions

Preheat the oven to 325ºF. Grease baking sheets.

Combine the flour, cream of tartar and baking soda in a small bowl and mix well.

Combine granulated sugar, butter and shortening in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolks, vanilla extract and almond extract. Add flour mixture and mix well.

Roll into 1-inch balls. Arrange on the prepared baking sheets.

Bake until edges of cookies are firm, about 12 to 15 minutes. Cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Mix confectioners' sugar and milk in a small bowl. Brush on top of cookies. Garnish with grated orange zest, if desired.

Grandma's Secret Trick
Unlike some other cookies, these aren't very brown when they're properly baked. To test for doneness, Grandma poked her finger lightly into the top of a cookie. If it made a deep indentation and felt liquidy, the cookies weren't ready. If it made a slight indentation and felt firmer, they were ready to remove from the oven.
