My grandmother was thrifty, so when we wanted to buy a candy bar, she made these treats instead.

Ingredients

Serves 24

  • 2/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 (18-ounce) jar chunky peanut butter
  • 3 1/3 cups cornflakes
  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips
Directions
  1. 1

Combine corn syrup and granulated sugar in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Remove from heat.

  2. 2

Add peanut butter to the corn syrup mixture and mix well. Add cornflakes and stir until they are coated with peanut butter mixture. Press mixture onto bottom of an 11 × 7-inch baking dish.

  3. 3

Place chocolate chips in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring continually, until melted.

  4. 4

Spread melted chocolate chips on top of peanut butter mixture. Chill, covered, until chocolate is firm, about 20 to 30 minutes. Cut into small bars.

Grandma's Secret Trick

Grandma's Secret Trick

"Don't be impatient when you melt chocolate," Grandma cautioned. She said overheating chocolate chips can cause them to "seize," or clump together tightly in a mass, and if they do, there's no reliable way to salvage the chocolate. So to make sure the chocolate didn't seize, Granda melted chocolate chips in the top of a double boiler over simmering, not boiling, water.
