Ingredients

Serves 30

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons milk
  • Red paste food coloring
  • Tubes of black, white, and yellow decorating icing
  • Red mini candy-coated chocolates
Directions
  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly grease 2 baking sheets.

  2. 2

In a small bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, using a mixer set on medium, beat granulated sugar and butter. Stir in egg, sour cream and vanilla. Add flour mixture, stirring until a dough forms.

  3. 3

On a floured surface, roll dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Using star-shaped cookie cutter, cut out shapes; place on prepared baking sheets. Bake until edges are golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer cookies to racks; cool completely.

  4. 4

In a bowl, combine confectioners sugar and enough milk to make a thin icing; tint red. Spoon icing over the hat and suit portion of cookies; set aside to dry completely, about 1 hour.

  5. 5

Using the black icing fitted with a writing tip, pipe the mittens and boots. Pipe a black belt on each cookie. Using the white icing fitted with a small star tip, pipe the beard and fringe details.

  6. 6

Press red candy-coated chocolates onto beards for the mouths. Pipe on white icing for the eyes; pipe black icing for eye centers. Using the yellow icing fitted with a writing tip, pipe buckles onto belts.

Grandma's Secret Tip

Grandma's Secret Tip

Grandma bought decorating tips that screwed onto tubes of decorating icing for piping the details on these cookies. Before she had the tips, she would squeeze the tube icing into a pastry bag or resealable plastic bag (then snip off a corner) for the piping.
