Sinking your teeth into one of Grandma’s intensely chocolate brownies was pure heaven.

Ingredients

Serves 24

  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter
  • 3 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 2 (1-ounce) squares semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
  • Confectioners' sugar
Directions
  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 13 × 9-inch baking pan.

  2. 2

Place butter, unsweetened chocolate and semisweet chocolate in a medium microwavable bowl. Microwave on HIGH until butter is melted, about 2 minutes; stir until chocolate is completely melted. Cool to room temperature.

  3. 3

Place flour, salt and baking powder in a small bowl; stir to combine. Beat granulated sugar, eggs and vanilla in a large bowl just until slightly thickened. Beat in chocolate mixture until well blended. Add flour mixture and beat until blended. Add sour cream; beat until combined. Stir in milk chocolate chips. Spread in prepared pan.

  4. 4

Bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out almost clean, about 20 to 25 minutes. (Do not overbake.) Cool brownies completely in pan on a wire rack. Cut into 2-inch squares. Sprinkle brownies with confectioners' sugar. Store tightly covered at room temperature.

Grandma's Secret Trick

Grandma's Secret Trick

When serving homemade brownies to guests, Grandma liked to dress them up just a bit. She carefully cut each brownie into a square that would fit perfectly inside a paper muffin cup liner and arranged the filled cups on a serving tray. Not only was Grandma's company impressed with her presentation, but the paper cups made handling and eating the brownies much less messy.
