Deep Dish Ziti Pie

Pizza and pasta fans, unite! This fun entrée tastes like a deep dish pizza but the “crust” is a blend

Ingredients

Serves 6 

  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion (about 1 small)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped carrot (about1 medium)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped celery (about1 medium stalk)
  • 1/2 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 can (15 oz.) diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup white wine or water
  • 2 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 8 oz. ziti
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp. (1/4 stick) butter
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Generously grease a9-inch pie pan. Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, carrot and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 3–4 minutes. Stir in the beef and cook until browned and crumbly, 4–5 minutes longer. Stir in the tomatoes, wine, tomato paste, sugar, basil, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, 15–20 minutes more.

    Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the package directions. Drain. Cool slightly. Combine the cooked pasta, the Parmesan, butter and eggs in a medium bowl. Mix well. Press the pasta mixture into and up the side of the prepared pie pan. Spoon the beef mixture over the pasta.

    Bake until the pasta is setand the beef mixture is heated through, about 25 minutes. Sprinkle with the mozzarella. Bake until the mozzarella is melted, about 5 minutes longer. Cut into wedges to serve.
