Orange-Glazed Almond Torte

45 minutesTo save the expense of purchased almond paste, make your own. Combine 1 cup blanched almonds, 1 tablespoon corn syrup and 1/2 teaspoon almond extract in a food processor. Process until a paste forms.
Ingredients

- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 sticks butter, softened
- 1 1/4 cups sugar, divided
- 2 ounces almond paste (about 1/2 cup)
- 6 eggs, separated
- 2 tablespoons grated orange peel
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 3 tablespoons orange juice
- 1/2 cup sliced almonds

Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan. Combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt in a small bowl; mix well.

Beat butter, 1/2 cup sugar and almond paste in a large bowl until creamy. Beat in egg yolks and orange peel until light and fluffy. Beat egg whites in a small bowl until soft peaks form.

Gradually add remaining sugar to bowl; beat until stiff peaks form. Stir half of egg whites into almond mixture. Add flour mixture and remaining egg whites alternately.

Spoon batter into pan. Bake until cake tests done, about 45 minutes. Cool; remove from pan. Mix confectioners' sugar and juice in a small bowl; drizzle glaze over cooled cake. Top with almonds.
