You can avoid the expense and extra calories of the cream by substituting half-and-half or a mixture of half milk and half heavy cream. The potatoes will still be a rich and satisfying side dish.

You can avoid the expense and extra calories of the cream by substituting half-and-half or a mixture of half milk and half heavy cream. The potatoes will still be a rich and satisfying side dish.

Ingredients

Serves 6 

  • 5 cups peeled, sliced potatoes
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups whipping cream
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup grated fontina cheese
Directions
  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 400°F. Place potato slices in a large pot. Add milk, cream, garlic, salt and white pepper.

    Bring potato mixture to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes.

    Coat a medium baking dish with butter. Add potato mixture. Sprinkle fontina over top.

    Bake potatoes until golden and set, about 40 minutes.
