A little sweet and a little spicy, the family loved when Grandma brought these out while we were watching the football game.

Ingredients

Serves 6

  • 16 whole chicken wings (about 3 1/2 pounds)
  • 1 medium onion, peeled
  • 6 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 (1-inch piece) fresh ginger
  • 1 small jalapeño
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon honey or molasses
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
Directions
  1. 1

Make 2 or 3 deep slashes in the meaty part of each wing.

  2. 2

Combine onion, garlic, ginger and jalapeño in a blender or food processor. Process to a paste, about 1 minute. Add 1/4 cup oil, soy sauce, salt, honey and five-spice powder.

  3. 3

Heat remaining oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add spice paste. Cook, stirring constantly, until thick and brown, about 10 minutes.

  4. 4

Combine spice paste and chicken in a large resealable plastic bag. Shake. Preheat grill or broiler. Grill, turning occasionally, until meat is cooked through, about 15 minutes.

Stretch Your Dollar

If you find you're out of honey or molasses, no need to buy more. You'll save money and a trip to the store by using an equal amount of light or dark corn syrup, and no one will know the difference.
