Grandma's Secret Trick

To avoid having ground nutmeg sit on the shelf for months or years between uses, Grandma bought whole nutmeg, which stays fresh for years. When she needed some ground nutmeg, Grandma just ran the nutmeg over the small-holed side of a grater. Because the flavor of fresh nutmeg is so powerful, Grandma found that she needed to use a little less than the recipe called for.
