Oven-Fried Apple Pies

Ingredients
Serves 6
- 1 can (21-ounce) apple pie filling, drained in a colander
- 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 10 sheets frozen phyllo dough (from a 1 pound package), thawed
- 6 tablespoons butter, melted and divided
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons sliced almonds

Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.

Combine the drained pie filling, graham cracker crumbs and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Mix well. Set aside.

Unroll the phyllo onto a sheet of plastic wrap. Cover with a damp linen kitchen towel to prevent the dough from drying out. Place 1 phyllo sheet on a work surface. Lightly brush the phyllo sheet with some of the melted butter. Repeat the layers 4 times.

Cut the stacked phyllo sheets with a sharp knife into three 9- x 41/4-inch strips. Place 1/4 cup pie filling mixture on 1 end of each strip.

Fold each strip over the filling to form a pocket. Fold the 3 open edges under. Transfer each pie to the prepared baking sheet with a spatula.

Repeat with the remaining phyllo, melted butter and pie filling mixture to make 6 pies total. Brush the top of each pie with more melted butter. Bake for 15 minutes. Brush the pies with the remaining melted butter. Sprinkle evenly with the sugar and almonds. Bake until the crusts are golden brown, about 5 minutes longer. Cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
