This tasty cake is so simple that it was the first thing Grandma taught me to bake.

Ingredients

Serves 12

  • 1 (2-layer) package chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter, divided
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter, softened, divided
  • 3 (1-ounce) squares semisweet chocolate, melted
  • 3 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 4 to 6 tablespoons milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Directions
  1. 1

For cake, preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 13 × 9-inch baking pan.

  2. 2

Prepare cake mix using the package directions, substituting 1/2 cup peanut butter and 4 tablespoons butter for the vegetable oil.

  3. 3

Spoon cake batter into prepared baking pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, about 30 to 35 minutes. Transfer the baking pan to a wire rack to cool completely.

  4. 4

For frosting, combine remaining peanut butter, remaining butter and chocolate in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer set at high speed until light and fluffy.

  5. 5

Add confectioners' sugar gradually to peanut butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Beat in enough milk to make a spreadable consistency. Beat in vanilla extract. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake. Serve immediately.

Grandma's Secret Trick

Grandma's Secret Trick

Grandpa was a real peanut butter lover, so Grandma found a way to decorate this cake and add more peanut butter flavor at the same time: She unwrapped miniature chocolate-covered peanut butter cups and arranged them decoratively on top of the cake.
