Apple Brown Betty

Ingredients
Serves 6
- 3 cups coarsely crumbled fresh bread
- 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
- 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, melted
- 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled, thinly sliced
- 1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 6 tablespoons dry sherry or orange juice, optional
Directions

Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Butter a 2-quart baking dish.

Combine bread crumbs, graham cracker crumbs and butter in a medium bowl and mix well.

Combine apples, brown sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon in a medium bowl and mix well.

Reserve some bread crumb mixture for topping. Sprinkle 1 cup of remaining bread crumb mixture in bottom of prepared baking dish.

Spoon one-third of the apple mixture on top of bread crumb mixture. Sprinkle with one-third of the sherry, if desired.

Repeat layers of bread crumb mixture, apple mixture and sherry two times. Top with reserved bread crumb mixture.

Bake, covered, for 30 minutes; uncover. Bake for 30 minutes longer. Serve with whipped cream.
