Chocolate Apple Strudel

Ingredients
Serves 8
- 1 sheet puff pastry (from a 17.3-ounce package)
- 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar, divided
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and finely choped (about 2 cups)
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces

Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Roll the pastry to a 12- x 10-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Place the pastry in the center of the prepared baking sheet.

Combine 1/4 cup sugar, the flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl. Mix well. Add the apples and chocolate chips. Toss to coat. Spoon the apple mixture lengthwise down the center of the pastry. Top with the butter.

Fold the sides of the pastry to the center, overlapping slightly. Fold the ends toward the center to cover the apples. Pinch lightly to seal. Turn the filled pastry over with the seam side down. Brush with 1 tbsp. water. Sprinkle with the remaining sugar.

Make diagonal cuts across the top of the pastry. Bake until the crust is golden and filling is bubbling, 18–22 minutes. Cool and cut into slices to serve.
