Chocolate Cherry Ice Cream

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 1 (10-ounce) jar maraschino cherries, drained, cut into quarters
  • 1 cup chocolate syrup
  • 3 (1 1/2-ounce) milk chocolate candy bars, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Directions

    Combine milk, granulated sugar and eggs in the top of a double boiler set over high heat and mix well. Cook mixture, stirring continually, until an instant-read thermometer inserted in center of mixture registers 160ºF. Maintain temperature, stirring continually, for 5 minutes.

    Remove egg mixture from heat. Place top of double boiler in an ice bath. Let stand for 30 minutes.

    Combine whipping cream, maraschino cherries, chocolate syrup, candy bars and vanilla extract in a large bowl and mix well.

    Add egg mixture to whipping cream mixture and mix well. Pour into a 2-quart ice-cream freezer. Freeze using manufacturer’s instructions until firm, about 50 to 60 minutes.

Grandma's Secret Trick

Grandpa had three great tips for using an ice-cream freezer: He turned the motor on before he started packing the ice and salt around the canister, he used seven parts ice to one part salt, and he kept a pitcher of hot water on hand to dribble over the ice and salt if they clumped together.
