For a delicate flavor, Grandma often added 1 tablespoon vanilla extract to the sugar syrup mixture as she beat it. When she felt creative, she divided the batch in half and made two different flavors, using lemon, orange or almond.
This was Grandma’s version of the New Orleans classic dessert, Bananas Foster.
