Sweet Chocolate Shakes
Prep time:
40 minutes, plus chilling:
“Grandma's twist on milk shakes was to cover ice cream with chocolatey milk and then top it all with whipped cream.”
Ingredients
Serves 4
- 2 cups milk, divided
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 4 teaspoons sugar
- 8 scoops vanilla ice cream
- 4 scoops chocolate ice cream
- 1/2 cup whipped cream
- 2 squares milk chocolate, grated, to garnish
- 4 chocolate-filled wafer stick cookies, to garnish
Directions
1
Pour 1 cup milk into a large saucepan. Stir in the cocoa and sugar.
2
Bring the mixture to a boil. Pour in the remaining milk; stir until heated through. Remove from heat. Let cool for 30 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a measuring cup. Chill for 1 hour in the refrigerator. Meanwhile, place 4 thick glasses in the freezer or refrigerator to chill for 2 to 3 minutes.
3
Place 2 scoops vanilla and 1 scoop chocolate ice cream in each glass. Stir the chilled chocolate mixture and pour over the ice cream.
4
Top each shake with a swirl of the whipped cream and sprinkle with the grated chocolate. Garnish with a wafer stick cookie and serve immediately.

For a spicy flavor, Grandma would add a cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon cinnamon to the milk in Step 1 (and remove the stick before chilling).
