Caramel Apple Oat Squares

Ingredients

 

  • 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 to 5 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, coarsely chopped (about 4 1/2 cups)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 (12-ounce) jar caramel ice cream topping
  • 1 quart vanilla ice cream, optional
